Anyone who’s spent time on The Apps knows that sometimes the only thing more exhausting than coming up with clever opening lines for your matches is actually keeping the conversation going.

Rizz, an AI-powered app that bills itself as your pocket dating assistant, wants to make both of those things easier by letting the algorithm simply tell you what to say. So, can a robot really out-rizz a Cosmo editor? I put it to the test to see for myself. Read on for my full review.
What Rizz Does
Rizz (free for a week, then from $7 per week) is a self-proclaimed “AI wingman” that helps people keep the flirty messaging flowing. Users can upload a screenshot of a conversation from their dating app of choice (or from iMessage orWhatsApp) and get a near-instant Rizz Reply. You can also upload a photo of a match and the app will produce a customized opening pickup line for you to throw their way.

What Rizz Is Like
From the jump, I loved how user-friendly the interface is. When I needed a witty response to send the Hinge guy who messaged me “Finally got my wife,” getting my Rizz Reply was a breeze. The response itself though...well, see for yourself: “With a wife already in the picture, are you looking for a side dish or just window shopping? ;)”

In Rizz’s defense, this very-unlike-me response—which I did send—didn’t deter my match at all. He replied, “Always room for a side dish, especially when it’s dessert.” So if nothing else, I’d like to thank Rizz for allowing me to get icked out by and avoid this man at the earliest stages. Further testing found that the app’s algo likes to scan one word (see: “wife”) from a message and run with it versus picking up on context or nuanced layers like sarcasm and subtle innuendo.
As a reverse test, I uploaded a screenshot of my own Hinge profile to see if I’d personally be wooed by any opening lines Rizz would suggest people send me. And honestly, I didn’t hate them! They weren’t wildly original—and they did contain an overabundance of winky-face emojis—but none would trigger an immediate left swipe.

Moving forward, I’m going to make a place for Rizz in my dating app journey. Its slightly outdated phrasing (it wanted me to ask a match whether he’s “ready for the awesomeness that awaits”) was easy enough for me to update, and I appreciated getting jumping-off points handed to me with little effort.
What’s in It for You
Think of Rizz as less of a true wingman and more of a slightly unhinged sidekick who occasionally has a good idea. It’s great for times when you don’t have much to say to someone or just can’t come up with yet another cute line. You can also use it as a brainstorming tool to help you decide whether or not to keep a conversation going.
