Morgan Evans and Kelsea Ballerini’s divorce has gotten all kinds of messy thanks to both of them writing songs about each other—not to mention Morgan’s highly dramatic statement claiming that Kelsea’s version of events “aren’t reality” and “leave out what really happened.”
To rewind just a moment, Kelsea and Morgan announced their divorce in August 2022. Kelsea shared the news on Instagram Stories, saying in part, “This deeply difficult decision is the result of a journey of love, growth, and effort that ultimately has come to an end. It’s hard to find the words here…but I feel extremely grateful for the years of marriage to Morgan and hopeful for the next seasons.”
Meanwhile, Morgan simply wrote, “I am very sad to confirm that after almost five years of marriage, Kelsea and I are parting ways. I wish it were otherwise but sadly it is not.”
At the time, a source told Us Weekly that “they’ve been working on their marriage for many years and have even tried therapy,” adding that they “privately separated at one point” and then “gave another go at it, trying their best to make it work. They ultimately decided that they had no choice but to officially separate.”
Flash-forward to 2023 and another source (or maybe the same source…who knows, they’re anon!) just told Us Weekly that the “nail in the coffin” when it came to Kelsea and Morgan’s relationship was having kids.
“Kelsea was very young and naive when she met Morgan; they clicked right away, but their relationship was always an emotional roller coaster,” the source said, adding that their “intense romance” had periods of “friction, tension, and toxicity.”
“She kept it a secret from most in her life,” the source added. “Morgan and Kelsea’s main issue was their disagreement about having kids.”
Turns out, Kelsea wasn’t ready to have children, while “Morgan [had] been ready for a long time. They had been having issues relating to each other and trouble being kind to each other, but the disagreement over kids was the nail in the coffin.”
Kelsea—who’s currently dating Outer Banks star Chase Stokes—opened up about where she and Morgan stand on Call Her Daddy, saying, “As he’s putting out a song about being blindsided, he’s taking half the house that he didn’t pay for.” Meanwhile, Morgan dropped this on Insta (not even on Stories…on the damn grid):
