The ending of Netflix's You Don't Know Me, explained

Throughout each episode of You Don't Know Me, we see Hero in court insisting he didn't shoot and kill gangster Jamil. Instead he claims he was pulled into the criminal underworld from his car dealership job over his girlfriend, Kyra. We must admit the episodes certainly kept us in suspense, especially with Hero's many many fibs to keep up with. Talking with his defendant lawyer, Hero explains what *really* happened on the night Jamil was shot dead.

Jamil had already been shot once, when he dodged his death after a plan set out by Hero and Curt (Hero's mate) to rob him had spiralled out of control. It was Kyra that shot him, but when Jamil made a full recovery in hospital, things took another surprising turn. Hero's little sister Bless had gone over to the hospital to keep a check on Jamil disguising herself as a volunteer. But her plan didn't work as he recognised her, taking her hostage at their club. Jamil called up Hero threatening to kill Bless if he didn't bring his money and Kyra immediately to him. Ready to do everything to protect his sister, Hero and Kyra raced to the club, where even more drama followed.

Kyra had been carrying Hero’s gun (the same one that he had bought from Jamil’s illegal gun seller), and when the situation heightened, she was about to pull the trigger. But as things played out in a flurry of violence, Bless picked up the gun and shot Jamil dead.

Hero devised a plan to escape the nightmare he'd found himself in, and take all the blame on himself in court to protect his sister. Kyra convinced him to frame the whole thing on her, so it seemed he had been set up by the love of his life. Kyra left the country and gave an anonymous tip to the police, while Hero set all the evidence in his house that would 'prove' his tragic story of being framed and betrayed by his girlfriend.

So, what was the You Don't Know Me twist?

Season 1 ends with the two divergent outcomes – guilty and not guilty – but it's never confirmed whether Hero walks free.

First up, the jury is seen passing a verdict of guilty, with celebration by Jamil’s parents, while Hero remains in prison for the rest of his life. We then see the next possibility with the jury finding Hero not guilty. Hero goes over to a foreign country to reunite with Kyra and restart their lives together. But the reality is this: the judge is heard asking the foreman of the jury whether they have made a verdict, to which the foreman replies, “Yes,” and the series comes to an annoyingly suspenseful end. Talk about a Duff Duff cliffhanger!

But You Don't Know Me is as much a love story as it is a crime thriller. The narrative has always been about Kyra and his love for her, from the moment Hero first saw her. The last words we hear from Hero hint to why we don't hear the verdict. "In the end, if you want to know the truth of who I am, ask me if I love her," says Hero. "Because hand on my heart, that's the only question I know I can answer where it's nothing but true. Do you love her? Do you love her?"

We can't help but wonder... Does this mean we're in for a Season 2 so we can put our racing mind to rest?
