Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky in Tom Ford

The Thor star was a co-chair of this year’s Gala, and we’ll be honest: That’s the only reason he’s on this list. Otherwise, we’d consider these looks too boring to consider. Sure, he looks hot, but as a co-chair of the Met Gala, this is a lackadaisical effort.

You had to know the queen of the red carpet serve was not going to restrict herself to just one jaw-dropping look. While this highly dramatic ensemble would rate as anyone else’s all-time personal best, for her, it’s only her second-best look of the night.

Jennifer Lopez in Schiaparelli Couture

Much like her fellow co-chair Chris Hemsworth, J.Lo didn’t do much to interpret the theme or even to represent as a co-chair. She’s there to serve pure pharmaceutical-grade J.Lo. This is spectacular on its own, but it does tend to resemble a million other looks she’s worn over the years.

5

Bad Bunny in Maison Margiela Artisanal

We loved the old-school foppishness of this look, especially the top half. It’s giving 17th century portraiture and he couldn’t be better suited for this style of dark romanticism. Like his fellow co-chair Zendaya, he understood that a certain theatricality was called for here. Our only complaint is that the pants and the footwear are less fabulous than everything above them.

6

Demi Moore in Harris Reed

Since so many of this year’s attendees played it very safe in their style choices, we confess to making a little cheer when this first appeared. It’s not the most fabulous look of the night and we’re not even sure we’d call it chic. Truth be told, it looks like something you’d see in a souvenir shop, but it’s big and dramatic and it practically screams “Fashion with a capital F.” It’s pure Met Gala, darling.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Richard Quinn

Sarah Jessica Parker is a Met Gala doyenne, a perennial attendee who absolutely never puts a well-shod foot wrong. Every year, she understands the setting, understands the theme, and understands what people expect of her—and then she delivers it. This doesn’t count among her more eye-popping Met Gala looks of all time, but it’s pretty, romantic, and sculptural in a way that feels perfectly appropriate for the setting. We just wish it had a bit more color.

Ayo Edebiri in Loewe

We so wanted to like this. From the waist up, it’s very pretty and it looks great on her. Her hair and makeup have never been better on a red carpet. But as soon as that skirt transitions to color—rather too abruptly and in shades way too vivid—the whole effect is ruined. If the effect had a little more subtlety and the colors were a little more subdued, we’d love it.

9

Josh O’Connor in Loewe

We were a little torn on this whole look. We always love when Josh O’Connor gets a little freaky on a red carpet, and we felt like his choices for the Challengers press tour were a little subdued. This feels like him getting back to his preferences. Unfortunately, it’s giving clown, just a little bit. It’s the shoes. They’re cute on their own, but they ruin the outfit.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph in The Gap by Zac Posen

Unless the theme that year has the words “Yee” and “Haw” in it, you will almost certainly never hear us praising anyone in denim on a Met Gala red carpet. And yet, Zac Posen, Executive Vice President & Creative Director of Gap Inc. and Chief Creative Officer of Old Navy, came through for Da’Vine in such a stunning way with this dramatically gorgeous gown, that we must go against our instincts and declare it pure fabulousness. She looked stunning. Who cares if it wasn’t on theme? It’s not a costume party.

Barry Keoghan in Burberry and Sabrina Carpenter in Oscar de la Renta

Look, they are the cutest couple ever and we’re thrilled for them, but a little coordinating might have been nice. Not that we expect couples to wear matching outfits, but he’s giving Willy Wonka, she’s giving socialite, and neither of them are on theme. They don’t look bad, but he’s going so hard and she’s playing it so safe.

12

Lana Del Rey in Vintage Alexander McQueen

We’re shocked to be writing this, but we think Lana Del Rey may have worn our favorite look of the 2024 Met Gala. And the funny thing is, we don’t even think it’s pretty. We also think it’s so on the nose with the theme that it you could almost see it as a too obvious choice. But it’s just so amazingly theatrical. It looks like it belongs in a museum, and she’s just the melodramatic diva who knew how to work it best. Respect. She nailed this one.

Kim Kardashian in Maison Margiela

Just an almost shockingly understated ensemble coming from the lady who pioneered the modern viral Met Gala look and spawned a couple of controversies along the way. The dress is a little flimsy, but it’s very pretty. The knit wrap is way too cozy and casual for the setting. You wear that when you’re sipping something warm out of a mug and thinking about your life, not when you’re striking a pose on the biggest red carpet of the year.

14

Dua Lipa in Marc Jacobs

dua lipa in marc jacobsJamie McCarthy//Getty Images

Sorry to Dua Lipa—and to Marc Jacobs—but this is all kind of boring and underwhelming to us. There’s nothing interesting or even eye-catching about the design. The style is stale. Of course she looks hot in it and it’s pretty much on brand for her, but it’s such a lazy way of approaching the Met Gala when you have a chance to really make a splash and a statement. This is “third costume change of the night at the Grammys.”

15

Sydney Sweeney in Miu Miu

sydney sweeney in miu miuDimitrios Kambouris//Getty Images

The dress may be the prettiest thing she’s ever worn on a red carpet, but we don’t think the gloves go with it at all. In fact, we think they come close to ruining the look—although we suppose someone thought the look needed an edge. We can’t say the black bob is working for her any better than the black gloves.

Doja Cat in Vetements

We guess so. It’s conceptual and unusual in a way we like to see for the Met Gala, but it’s also pretty underwhelming and way off-theme, although her explanation was that a plain white cotton tee was paying tribute to the flower of cotton, which…sure. Okay.

17

Lizzo in Weinsanto

lizzo in weinsantoDimitrios Kambouris//Getty Images

It’s a no for us, we’re sorry to say. We assume the vase-like shape is deliberate, but the headpiece is simply way too gimmicky to be fabulous. The colors are a bit dreary and the construction isn’t up to the level of the Met Gala. It just doesn’t work, from concept to execution. And she could barely walk in it.

18

Cardi B in Giambattista Valli

cardi b in giambattista valliJohn Shearer//Getty Images

It is the epitome of space-taking fashion and it’s dramatic in the way we like to see on the Met Gala red carpet. The turban and jewelry are gorgeous and the whole look is memorable beyond memorable, but if we’re being honest, we’re a little underwhelmed by the dress design, volume and drama aside.

Chloë Sevigny in Dilara Findikoglu

You can’t accuse her of being off-theme. With a dress made out of scraps and remnants from Victorian gowns, it’s the very embodiment of the Sleeping Beauties theme. And we have to give her credit for wearing a period-appropriate hairstyle that isn’t exactly the freshest or most flattering in 2024. But in the end, the whole thing strikes us as gimmicky—more costume than fashion. And it’s not all that pretty either.

20

Pamela Anderson in Oscar de la Renta

pamela anderson in oscar de la rentaANGELA WEISS//Getty Images

Sporting her signature clean face and a neutral dress, you’d think Pamela Anderson would have been one of the underwhelming looks of the night. Instead, she glowed. No one ever made beige look so glam and ethereal. The design is basic and the styling, aside from a few bits of flair, was extremely low-key, but we don’t think she ever looked so beautiful. We’d like to say the hair accessories and the gorgeous necklace are what made the look, but honestly, it’s the smile. She loves how she looks.
