Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan take centre stage in a new Prime Video film, Foe, which tells the story of a couple whose lives are turned on their head when a strange man appears at their door. But what exactly happens at the end of the movie?
Set in 2065, Foe follows a young, married couple named Henrietta and Junior who live on a secluded farm. When a man named Terrance arrives and tells Junior he's about to be sent to space, his wife is left in the company of a robot who looks just like her husband. Yes, spooky.
The sci-fi thriller is understandably garnering attention on social media, not least because of Saoirse and Paul's stellar performances. But how does the story come to a close?
The ending of Foe explained
The big twist in Foe is that the version of Junior that we have been watching from the very beginning of the film, is actually not the 'real' one. In fact, from the first scene, we meet the Human Substitute of Junior, because the real Junior is already at the space station, and that very first encounter is the AI's initial introduction into the home. Despite this, the AI Junior and Henrietta begin to connect, and form a somewhat healthier bond and relationship.
When the real Junior returns, his AI clone is put to sleep. Henrietta struggles to come to terms with the fact that her idea of what their relationship was - and her experience with the duplicate Junior - is not real, and that this somewhat happy life was a temporary fix.

As a result, she and the real Junior fall back into their tumultuous, toxic arguments, and she eventually takes off, leaving an empty letter for the real Junior. Oh, and a replica of her, for him.
While it's unclear whether Junior realises this Henrietta is a replica is slightly left up to audience interpretation - while it's implied he recognises she's a clone, it's suggested he does not actually seem to care. And, in fact, he wants his perfect wife at home, while the actual Hen wants to experience a broader, more exciting world.
