House of the Dragon season 2 is finally nearly here (bring on June 16!) and we cannot wait to catch up with our favorite chaotic family. The new season will pick up after the death of Lucerys, and, as is seen in the trailer, the two sides of the family are gearing up for war. *cue le dramatic music*
And now that we've done a recap of season one, unpacked the complicated family tree, and refreshed our minds on which dragons belong to who, all we need to remind ourselves of is the ages of the characters planning this almighty war. And like us, you may be a bit surprised to learn some of the characters' ages. Aegon is meant to be just 18 years old while sitting on the iron throne? And Princess Rhaenys is supposedly heading into her 70s? Yeah, that doesn't feel right. Read on to find out the surprising ages of the House of the Dragon characters.
Rhaenyra Targaryen - 32

Our queen has gone through a lot in her short lifetime: the death of her parents, two weddings, and multiple children. And as we head into season 2, she is around 32 years old. When season 1 began, the young Rhaenyra was around 15 years old, and now in real life, Emma D'Arcy, who plays the current Rhaenyra, is 31 years old.
Daemon Targaryen - 48

Rhaenyra's uncle and husband (and the internet's current boyfriend) Daemon is believed to be around 48 at the time of season 2. When the series kicked off, he was in his early 30s. Oh, and FYI, he's played by actor Matt Smith, who is 41 years old.
Alicent Targaryen - 37

Ok, so even though Alicent and Rhaenyra were besties during their youth, there is still believed to be an age gap between the pair. In the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin upon which the series is based, Alicent is nine years older than Rhaenyra. But in the series, they seemed to have reduced the age gap to make Alicent and Rhaenyra closer in age (yet still have Alicent be old enough to have been Aegon's mother). Alicent is played by Olivia Cooke, who is 30 years old.
Criston Cole - 39

Ser Criston Cole is around his late 30s when the second season kicks off. However, in the book series, he was much older and in his late 40s. When the series first began, he was guarding the young Rhaenyra in his mid-20s. Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston, is 30 years old.
Lord Corlys Velaryon - 75

In the books, the Sea Snake is in his mid-70s when the Dance of the Dragons (aka the big battle) kicks off, which means he was around 60 when the series first began. Given that he's played by Steve Touissant, who is 57 years old, it's likely the series has aged him down a bit.
Rhaenys Targaryen - 70

Okay, this one makes no sense to us because there's no way Princess Rhaenys is 70. However, going off the ages in the book, Rhaenys is supposed to be around five to 10 years younger than her husband, making her around 70 in season 2. She's played by Eve Best, who is 52 years old.
Otto Hightower - 55
HBO / Sky
The hand of the king is in his mid-50s during the second season of House of the Dragon, meaning he was around 40 years old at the start of season one. He's played by Rhys Ifans, who is close in age to his character at 56 years old.
Aegon Targaryen - 18
Sky//HBO
The unrightful king Aegon is 18 years old when season 2 begins. In the book series, he's a little bit older at 22 years old, however, it appears he's been aged down for the TV show. He's played by Tom Glynn-Carney, who is actually 29 years old.
Aemond Targaryen - 16
HBO / Sky
Again, this is another age we can't get our heads around, as Aemond looks far older than 16, but given his brother is two years older than he is, he has to be that age. He's played by Ewan Mitchell, who is 27 years old.
Helaena Targaryen - 17
HBO / Sky
Aegon's queen and sister is just a year younger than he is at 17 years old and has already had three children. In real life, she's played by Phia Saban, who is 25 years old.
Jacareys Velaryon - 16
HBO / Sky
Rhaenyra's heir Jacareys is around 15 or 16 years old and is played by Harry Collett, who is 20 years old.
Baela Targaryen - 16
HBO / Sky
Baela, the daughter of Daemon and Laena Targaryen, is also around 16 years old. She's played by Bethany Antonia, who is 26 years old.
